Twin-screw granulation has advanced considerably over the last decade, maturing to the point where the technology is now leaving the lab setting and finding a place in production. There are considerable benefits to making the switch from batch to continuous processing but also distinct differences between these two modes of production that formulators need to keep in mind. Moreover, there are differences in granulation behavior as a process transition from lab twin-screw extruder to a larger machine. Often, these differences will be related to specific ingredients in a formulation. This talk will focus on wet granulation issues one may see when scaling up a process, offer explanations for the phenomena and when available, consider remedies.
