Research Director
Joanneum Research Forschungsges GmbH, Austria
Thomas Birngruber is deputy director and research group leader at Joanneum Research in the south of Austria, in the city of Graz. He and his team are working on translational research in dermatology. The core technology in his portfolio is open-flow microperfusion (OFM) and its applications in the skin and in the brain. OFM in combination with other technologies allows a very close look on Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics in the skin.
Thomas Birngruber and his team have a 10-year lasting cooperation with US-FDA in the development of innovative systems that allow testing of Bioequivalence of topical drugs directly in the skin. The work in different project positions provided a deep insight into many aspects of dermal research.
Aside from the PK Thomas Birngruber is also working on biomarker development in inflammatory skin diseases with an influence of the immune system namely psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
His main research areas remain Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics but the applications broadened to a variety of peripheral organs. Thomas Birngruber has a strong network in academia as well as the pharmaceutical industry.
