Dr. Mohamed Moustafa, Assistant Professor in Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis TN, USA. Also, I'm an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt. I have broad training and experience in preparation of different pharmaceutical dosage forms, drug delivery systems, sustained release and long acting ocular formulations, corneal permeability, formulations stability, ocular pharmacokinetics, drug targeting and topical ocular nano-drug delivery systems such as microemulsions, nanoemulsions, nanoparticles, bilosomes, transfersomes and nanofibers. In my research, my main focus is formulating drug delivery systems for the treatment of ocular diseases associated with loss of human vision (such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration) to help people to retain good vision during their whole life span. The focus of my current research is preparation and characterization of long acting topical ophthalmic formulations (mainly for glaucoma) that achieve targeted drug delivery for both anterior and posterior eye compartments. To achieve that purpose, my formulations always possess sustained drug release behavior for more than one day, have bioadhesive characteristics and could be used as a once daily treatment in order to achieve higher patient acceptance and adherence to the treatment than the conventional aqueous eyedrops that are used several times per day. Also, my topical ophthalmic formulations are characterized by their permeability enhancing properties that enable them to facilitate the penetration of the incorporated drugs through the ocular surface into deeper tissues inside the eyeball where they interact with their target receptor to exert their pharmacological actions.
