Dr. Michael Thompson is an Associate Dean and Professor of Chemical Engineering at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario). His areas of interest lie in manufacturing, particularly focused on particulate and polymer processes for the pharmaceutical, food, and plastics industries. His research group were early developers of the continuous method now known as twin-screw granulation, beginning studies in 2006 to understand how the screws could process powders just as effectively as the machine handles viscous liquids. Over the years, the group has presented our findings at conferences like AAPS, in multiple journal papers, trade articles (Pharmaceutical Technology) as well as give invited talk at company sponsored events. Our studies specialize on pilot-scale processing and have provided guidance on operational and formulation issues in the hopes to see this technology mature for commercial implementation. Unique methods like foam granulation and heat assisted dry granulation have been demonstrated, along with thorough studies of wet and hot melt granulation. Dr. Thompson is currently working in the Leistritz industrial consortium with many of the major pharmaceutical companies on twin-screw granulation, along with Dr. Zhang (UTexas), with specific interests at the moment on scaleability, PAT development, and intelligent monitoring methods.
